Red Man Swimming is a performance by Kata Sangkhae created during the period of Cities on the Move in Bangkok, at a time when the city was deeply affected by economic downturn, urban congestion, and social uncertainty. Nominated by curator Chitti Kasemkitvattana, Sangkhae performed the work by wearing a self-designed red swimming suit — conceived as a wearable object — and jumping into the Chao Phraya River, one of Bangkok’s primary arteries of movement and commerce.

In this work, the artist transforms the act of swimming into a metaphor for urban survival. The river becomes an imagined alternative route through a city paralyzed by traffic, infrastructure overload, and economic pressure. Moving against currents and debris, the red body navigates both physical resistance and symbolic hardship, reflecting the lived experience of city dwellers struggling to move forward amid systemic constraints.
The vivid red suit amplifies visibility and vulnerability, turning the artist’s body into a moving signal within the urban landscape — at once absurd, fragile, and defiant. Through imagination and physical endurance, Red Man Swimming addresses the psychological weight of urban life, where mobility is no longer guaranteed and progress demands constant effort.

Created during a period of economic crisis, the performance connects personal action with collective condition. It speaks to the tension between aspiration and limitation, highlighting how the body becomes a site where social, economic, and infrastructural pressures are felt most directly. Living and working in Bangkok, Sangkhae situates himself within the city’s flow, using performance as a means to question how individuals endure, adapt, and imagine movement within collapsing systems.

ในผลงานชิ้นนี้ การว่ายน้ำถูกใช้เป็นอุปมาแทนการเอาชีวิตรอดในเมือง แม่น้ำกลายเป็นเส้นทางทางเลือกเชิงจินตนาการ ท่ามกลางเมืองที่ระบบคมนาคมบนบกติดขัดและถูกกดทับด้วยโครงสร้างพื้นฐานและแรงกดดันทางเศรษฐกิจ ร่างกายสีแดงที่เคลื่อนผ่านกระแสน้ำและเศษซากต่าง ๆ สะท้อนถึงการดิ้นรนของผู้คนเมืองที่ต้องพยายามเคลื่อนไปข้างหน้า ท่ามกลางข้อจำกัดที่ควบคุมไม่ได้

ชุดว่ายน้ำสีแดงทำให้ร่างกายของศิลปินโดดเด่น เปราะบาง และเสี่ยงอันตราย พร้อมกันนั้นก็แฝงความท้าทายและการต่อต้าน ร่างกายของศิลปินจึงกลายเป็นสัญญาณที่เคลื่อนไหวอยู่ในภูมิทัศน์เมือง ทั้งในลักษณะน่าขบขัน อ่อนแอ และดื้อดึงไปพร้อมกัน ผ่านพลังของจินตนาการและความอดทนทางร่างกาย Red Man Swimming พูดถึงภาระทางจิตใจของการใช้ชีวิตในเมือง ที่การเคลื่อนที่ไม่ใช่สิ่งที่รับประกันได้อีกต่อไป และการก้าวไปข้างหน้าต้องแลกมาด้วยความพยายามอย่างต่อเนื่อง

ผลงานนี้สร้างขึ้นในช่วงวิกฤตเศรษฐกิจ และเชื่อมโยงการกระทำส่วนบุคคลเข้ากับสภาวะร่วมของสังคม มันสะท้อนความตึงเครียดระหว่างความหวังกับข้อจำกัด และชี้ให้เห็นว่าร่างกายมนุษย์คือพื้นที่ที่แรงกดดันทางสังคม เศรษฐกิจ และโครงสร้างเมือง ปรากฏชัดที่สุด ในฐานะศิลปินที่ใช้ชีวิตและทำงานอยู่ในกรุงเทพฯ คธา แสงแข วางตนเองไว้ท่ามกลางกระแสของเมือง และใช้ศิลปะแสดงสดเป็นเครื่องมือในการตั้งคำถามว่า ปัจเจกจะอดทน ปรับตัว และจินตนาการถึงการเคลื่อนที่ภายใต้ระบบที่กำลังสั่นคลอนได้อย่างไร
